On Duty: Late Season with the Biarritz Lifeguards
Biarritz is a unique hub in the French Basque Country, blending an energetic surf city lifestyle with a powerful connection to nature—featuring world-class beach breaks and rocky points, all just a stone's throw from the mountains and the Spanish border. Because of this, the local coastline draws massive crowds of tourists, surfers, and beachgoers into waters known for heavy swells, shifting currents, and sudden summer storms.
The 60 local lifeguards on duty aren't just there for the summer aesthetic. They are core watermen and women, part of a 450-member local club that trains relentlessly all year round. From April to late October across Biarritz's six local beaches, they stand ready when the elements become the most challenging.
With this series, I wanted to propose an embedded view and an honest look at the commitment of the Biarritz lifeguards, documenting their reality through those final months when the crowds leave, the ocean gets heavier, and their focus remains unchanged.
